The gardens are exploding....I was very early to start and have been lucky. Lilacs are in bloom and I have my bouquet of lily of the valley by my bedside...love the smell of these two flowers. The butterfly enjoying the flower is an Eastern tiger swallowtail. Yesterday I began the renovation of the turkey coop. The size of this shed is 9 by 11' and it is sinking into the ground. It was originally put on very large skids which have now totally rotted as well as part of the floor. We need to remove the floor and jack it up but the turkey run is attached to it. I will be insulating it and using it as a workshop or bunky with an outdoor shower behind. I planted radishes with the carrots because it takes a while for carrots to germinate...radishes come up really fast and I saw them peeking out yesterday.
Dwight and Charles got the four posts for my wisteria arbor in and just in time as my wisteria has started sprouting. I will let that the posts dry in the cement for a few days and then put the top on it. While at the yurt prepping it for guests I found some mushrooms that just looked edible. They were growing on a piece of old damp pine.....did my research and it turned out to be oyster mushrooms...I fryed them up and all three of us survived...they were delicious...now I am going to see if I can grow more from this log. Currants and blueberries are flowering well. Even one of the grape plants I bought starting setting forth a bunch of grapes which I had to pinch off and again next year to make sure I get all the energies into the root system. Dwight hauled the last of the lumber he had cut from the back forty and I built a couple of simple raise beds then Dwight did the hard work of filling them halfway with sand and the rest to black garden soil. Today the potatoes, carrots, radishes, etc got planted. Tomorrow I plant the beans. Dwight was very busy today cutting all the slab into wood chips for our landscaped while I planted, divided hostas, worked the soil in prep for the wood chips. One load of chips applied the other tomorrow, picked up guests from the cabin at two, brought back rhubarb and asparagus...Its 5 and Im pooped, bring laundry in, having a beer, then get supper ready. All I can say is ....good lord Dwight and I work hard. Another busy day, Dwight found another pile of blocked wood that he split which brings him close to 25 cords of wood...hooray...now we need to split a few of those cords in half again for hot tub wood. Black flies not so bad today because it was cooler....may be a light frost tonight. We got a couple of larger raised beds made and now in the process of filling with sand and garden soil. I checked in a couple at the cabin and brought a few plants back...bleeding hearts, chocolate mint and astibile. Looked for morels but only spotted 5 false morels. Looks like we will wait for the new deck till next year....may be much smaller with steps leading down to a stone patio....thinking of the future....dont want to maintain a wooden deck. The ice was off the lake by the end of April.
Today is hot and humid 26 Celsius and the blackflies are out and biting. Fiddleheads are almost finished and I have 8 bags in the freezer and a big pot of fiddlehead portabella mushroom soup as well as having had numerous meals of them...yum Today I was out early dividing hostas...25 so far and a few more to go. I picked up a pile of plants yesterday and busy planting those as well. A couple of rose bushes, 2 clematis, some vegetables. Dwight will be pleased to hear that I planted all his gladiolus bulbs that we dug up last year. I started my seeds April 27 and they are all outside now in the 3 elevated canoes and rowboat. Oh Dwight and I moved our 8 blueberry bushes from our old sandy garden back in the bush...they were not too happy there. Sold all the turkeys, have one left to go, he's very friendly and we let him out sometimes, he just follows us around strutting his stuff. We still have the 6 chickens and getting 6 eggs a days but not a problem selling them. A couple of weeks ago I picked up some red wrigglers (composting worms) to help with my indoor composting. I find that in the winter the compost piles up because its frozen so I thought I would set up a bin inside and have the worms do their work....see trading turkeys for worms lol! The rental business is doing great and busy with the summer setup and maintenance there too. Dwight has just finished all the wood, cut, split and stacked, he has about 18-20 face cords, he was in a big rush to get that done before the blackflies came out and he did it! We had 10 yards of garden soil dumped here....wow nice stuff...looks like black earth but with compost in it...no weed seeds! If we need more compost I have 4 bins going. I am top dressing everything and Dwight is going to build some more raised gardens for me but first he needs to get the saw going and cut up some more boards. I need more space for the beans, potatoes, more kale and chard, etc...Dwight hates grass anyway. He will be busy at his lumber yard as he also needs to chip me a pile of wood chips with his big chipper behind the tractor. I just remembered..I have a container of chocolate mint I got from the cabin...I off to plant that on the side of the hill away from everything else (its invasive) but we love the tea it makes and need a whole pile of it for this winter. |
