Well my one chicken did not make it, pour girl. We have three heritage turkeys, two Toms and a hen, we slaughtered one of the Toms and it dressed out at 17lbs. Eight for dinner. It ended up taking twice as long as a grocery store turkey. I think that may in part have been because I left it in its maple brine out in the porch when it dipped to -13....He was very cold when he went into the oven. It was a great bird with a lot of very lean dark meat.
My hen now is laying eggs but the nights are still really cold and not sure if she and the Tom got together either. The other things is that some of her eggs have been breaking or broken and eaten by one of them...not sure what is going on. Yesterday another disappeared but no moisture in the nest to indicate a broken egg. I am hoping for some babies from them...if not, then we might have a thanksgiving and Christmas turkey to look forward to.

Just back from Holland last week. My main purpose was to pick up four guitars. My grandfather was one of the early luthiers of Amsterdam and after the war he had a shop where he hand made guitars. I was never able to locate one until someone contacted me about information about my grandfather because he was doing an article on him. When he was a young boy his brother gave him a guitar and now he wanted to find out about who made it. I helped him with some of the information and at the end of the article he put my email address and that I was looking for my grandfathers guitars. Hooray I have my collection and another coming in August. Now I need to seriously buckle down and learn to play.

Early may Dwight and I are off to a wedding in New Orleans!!!! My son Josh and Hanna are getting married New Orleans style. Dwight and I are off for a week...should be lots of fun. House sitter is in place. I will be making toasted pecan maple pralines for the wedding favours as well as a hand sculpted cake topper of Josh and Hanna. Sorry I cant show you till after the wedding because no one is to see the brides dress:)
Well this year was a bumper crop for maple syrup, we got over 5 gallons of the sweet stuff. I am finding more and more uses for it. This year I would like to build a more permanent structure for the fire pit.
We had about 50 taps in and finally pulled them before the season was out....enough is enough.
