It's 4:20 pm and I feel my back, it's pissing rain outside. Crazy weather. Two days ago it was -22 and now its 10. They called for 15 to 22 mm of rain last night.....didnt happen thank god. I was trying to figure out how to pick up my four guests and their gear at the cabin, hmmmmm the snow mobile and sled or the ATV with tracks and trailer.
Dwight is out the door to go to work at 6 am and I am up at 6:30....things dont look so back outside....I see I have a text that came in just after 4am, my son Josh. Well it says "I just crashed my car on Turnbulls hill" He had just finished his night shift and came up our road, the first hill was fine, the going down hill was glare ice, 3 donuts and into a tree to avoid going into the lake. You see its that time of year, melts in the day and freezes at night. When you have rain threatening you dont sand cause its a waste, its just washes away but we have guests to get out. We just did not think of getting the vehicles out to the top of the hill. Oh well these things happen.
I send Dwight an email but he is not in yet and then a text comes in...he and Josh are off sanding the hill, Dwight is stuck halfway up. Then they are up for cafe lattes and Josh off to bed next door. So much for going into his paying job today.
Dwight went to the sand pit with ATV and tracks, trailer and a couple of loads later the hill was heavily sanded, God that man works hard...then its starts to rain hard and he says the sand with wash away and our guests car is parked in our driveway so off he goes to get their keys so he can drive their car out for them. The rain did not last long.
Then he is our doing more sanding. Meanwhile I am making chocolate chip cookies. At 11:30 we both go our with our machines and pick the guests up and bring them to their car. The rain is holding off.
I go back to the cabin to ready it for guests coming in tomorrow and Dwight is off to have a stress test done and then bottle bubbly.
The cabin looks great, the guests cleaned it up well. The spring on the side of the hill is running great with the thaw that we are having so there was enough pressure in the hose so I took advantage of that to fill the inside reservoirs.
I see that we are almost out of wood there so with the weather cooperating I decide to haul in a load of firewood in the sled behind the snow mobile, I can get almost a half cord in it.
When the inside reservoirs are full I decide to fill the hot tub so I threw the hose in and headed off to get a load of wood. Everytime I get a load I have a small pile of smaller shorter pieces that I use for the yurts small stove so I make a trip up there each time and drop some wood off since I have guests coming into the yurt tomorrow as well.
The second load of wood at the cabin just about fills the rack outside the door so I am golden. Then I get a good fire going in the hot tub....just one, enough to take the chill out so it does not freeze tonight. Tonight it is going to -10. This will give me a head start tomorrow, All I will have to do is drive there, we have a direct route (3 minute ride by snow mobile) and set the inside fire and the hot tub fire and then go to the yurt and set that fire.
Guests arrive at the house and off we go via snow mobile, its a fun job and keeps me out where I love to be.
You see in the country to have to keep your eyes on the weather....Like they say, make hay while the sun shines:)
Oh and on top of all that we tapped our trees yesterday. Follow that on the link at the top of the page. Its going to be tricky this year for maple syrup, not sure what to expect, I think it may be a bad year. The weather is just too erratic.
Oh oh oh, one more thing, I started a cooking blog, check that above for the link as well. I had always wanted to make a cookbook for Josh with all his favourite foods that I made as he was growing up, so the blog seems perfect, it will have those and more in it. The hard part is measuring things out cause Im the kind of cook that mostly throws things together. Its coming along just fine.:) Till next time.
