There was a big split pine across the lake from the cabin and one of the two sides fell this winter. Great! I don't have to cut a tree down. Bad! the butt of the split stayed on the base about 30 feet up in the air. The pine took down a cedar and while I was cutting it from the stump I looked up to see this 2 foot pine sideways overhead. Very bad! I cut that cedar and hauled it out in record time.
Getting the actual logs out was a bit tricky but using fallen trees as skids and with long ropes and chains I hauled the logs out with the ATV to the packed trail. From there I skidded them out to the mill were they will be cut into square timbers. Well when I can find the sawmill that is buried under the snow I will cut them up.
Actually the first 20 foot log skidded out up the big hill at the lake, slowly but I made it. The second was quite a bit bigger and halfway up the hill I stalled and started to spin the ATV tracks. I texted sweetie and she tooled up with her powerful snowmobile, backed up so I could strap her machine to the front of my ATV. We tensioned up the machines and then up the hill we went in tandem, her machine hardly noticing the load. Amazing what a 85 horsepower snowmobile can pull. Once on top of the hill I made it all the way to the mill under sweetie's watchful eye just in case I needed another tow.
