We spent a full week getting Owls Nest ready with spring cleaning to finish, flowers to plant, water toys to get out, moving tools, food, clothes, etc. This year we are better setup with the big tent to put stuff.
Once at the yurt, home improvements start!!! I brought in about 20 loads of sand with the tractor to fill in on both sides of the firepit across from the yurt. The sand box has been moved, gone to Owls Nest, and a tent platform will be built here. The old woodpile has been moved and I've been cutting lumber for Lucy to build a 3 foot x 16 foot shed. This will be divide in two with one 8 foot wood shed and two 4 foot storage lockers. All those big trees that I had dragged in for the timberframe course??? I've loaded the log skid twice now and all those logs are disappearing fast. Lots of slabs which means lots of wood chips. I'm really getting good at this.
Living in the yurt has been challenging. We need to build a roof over the kitchen platform. It gets quite hot at the yurt site and we don't have a shady area to rest in. Nor a covered place outside when it rains!!! The cats like having an "open door policy" to come in and out of the yurt so we have a hanging mosquito net in front of the door but the mosquitos and no seeums do get in. There are a lot of deer flies this year and they seem to breed down at the trailhead so they tend to follow us and the dogs up when we travel. Winston is particularly afflicted by them. He likes to escape into the kitchen or the small doggie tent we have set up. The heat and humidity has been pretty hard on both dogs. Whenever I drive the truck up they hang out underneath so I've got to check before driving off!
The cats have discovered that they can climb the cedar pole and jump onto the yurt roof. It's amusing to hear them walking on the roof and funny to see them peering into the yurt throught the plastic top. Simon comes down to the door and likes to be carried off the roof and inside. It's a real pain to hear them meowing to get in during the middle of the night though. Simon has been catching things, including a red squirrel, and loves to bring them in to play with. There was quite a commotion with Simon chasing a red squirrel and Lucy chasing both in the yurt the other day. I didn't see it but I heard the story. I swear it's true. The chickens are doing well in their new coop the Lucy built before we moved. We have three chicken coops now, one at each place so I figure we're done building them for a while.
The gardens are doing well with a couple of groundhogs dispatched so far. The feeders have been attracting lots of birds as well as squirrels and chipmunks. Time for the bucket of water and peanut butter. Sorry guys.
The last few days the heat and humidity have been quite intense and we've gone back to Owls Nest for a few days before the next guests arrive. In three weeks we'll be at the cabin for a month. Life is lovely.
